East Gippsland Shire Council covers an area just over 20900 square kilometers and is the second largest council area in Victoria.  The area is located 3.5 hours from Melbourne and consists mainly of publically owned land such as National Parks and State Forests.  The local economy relies heavily on tourism to these areas but also has a significant amount of agriculture and forestry which also contribute to the local economy.

Dog Registration Requirements:
 
East Gippsland Shire Council requires all dogs over the age of 3 months to be registered.  Once the dog is registered with the council a unique tag is issued to the owner to be placed on the dogs collar. This tag aids in the prompt return of dogs that may be found wandering.
 
Number of Dogs Permitted Per House hold:
 
East Gippsland Shire Council allows a maximum number of 2 dogs per household on non farming land.

Animal Release Requirements:
  • All dogs and cats over the age of 3 months must be registered with Council prior to release.
  • Owner identification is required at release.
  • Fines will be imposed for unregistered animals and animals at large.
