Dog Registration Requirements:
 
Melbourne City Council requires all dogs over the age of 3 months to be registered.  Once the dog is registered with the council a unique tag is issued to the owner to be placed on the dogs collar.  This tag aids in the prompt return of dogs that may be found wandering.
 
Number of Dogs Permitted Per House hold:
 
Melbourne City Council currently has no restrictions on the number of dogs a resident may own.  Residents are asked to ensure that dogs have enough space to live comfortable and are not a nuisance to neighbours and other residents.

The Lost Dogs Home looks after impounded dogs in the Melbourne City Council area.  Their offices and animal shelter is located at 2 Gracie Street, North Melbourne.

Animal Release Requirements:
  • $11 per day or part thereof plus a $44 release fee for dogs with no identification tags / microchip.
  • $11 per day or part thereof plus a $22 release fee for registered / microchipped dogs.
  • All dogs and cats over the age of 3 months must be registered with Council prior to release.
  • Owner identification is required at release.
  • Fines will be imposed for unregistered animals and animals at large.
