Mitchell Shire Council covers an area just over 2800 square kilometers and is located one hour north of Melbourne.  This shire area is disected by the Hume Hwy which has contributed to the significant growth in the area.  The local economy of Mitchell Shire is generally rural but many people who live in this area are employed by the military base at Puckapunyal.

Dog Registration Requirements:
 
Mitchell Shire Council requires all dogs over the age of 3 months to be registered.  Once the dog is registered with the council a unique tag is issued to the owner to be placed on the dogs collar. This tag aids in the prompt return of dogs that may be found wandering.

Mitchell Shire Council allows a maximum number of 2 dogs per household on non farming land.

Animal Release Requirements:
  • All dogs and cats over the age of 3 months must be registered with Council prior to release.
  • Owner identification is required at release.
  • Fines will be imposed for unregistered animals and animals at large.
