Mount Alexander Shire Council covers an area just over 1500 square kilometres and is located west of Melbourne at a distance of 125 kilometres.  The area has two main townships, Castlemaine and Maldon with the rest of the area a mix of rural and semi rural.  Mount Alexander Shire Council has a local economy which is based on agriculture and manufacturing with food processing and steel fabrication the main manufacturing activities.

Dog Registration Requirements:

 

Mount Alexander Shire Council requires all dogs over the age of 3 months to be registered.  Once the dog is registered with the council a unique tag is issued to the owner to be placed on the dogs collar. This tag aids in the prompt return of dogs that may be found wandering.

 

Number of Dogs Permitted Per House hold:

 

Mount Alexander Shire Council allows a maximum number of 2 dogs per household on non farming land.

Mount Alexander Shire Council has a dog pound located at RSPCA facility in Langslow Street, Castlemaine.

 

The opening hours are as follows:

Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday & Saturday:  10 am - 3 pm
Thursdays:  10 am - 5 pm
Sundays:  10am - 12pm

Animal Release Requirements:

• All dogs and cats over the age of 3 months must be registered with Council prior to release.
• Owner identification is required at release.
