About the Beach:

Shelly's Beach is a large stretch of beach between Franklin Road and Hemston Avenue is a designated off leash dog beach for use all year round by dogs and their owners.  Shelly's Beach has great views of Port Phillip Bay and on a clear day the Melbourne city sky line is visible to the north.  Shelly's Beach is located on the Port Phillip bay side of the coastline so it is a relatively sheltered beach but as with most beaches south of Melbourne this area can be very cold in winter and can also have surprisingly cold water temperatures during the summer months.

How to get there:

Shelly's Beach is located on Melways Map156 G2 - J3 and is accessible by both public transport and by private car.  From Flinders Street Station catch the Frankston train from platform 6 and travel to Frankston station.  Once at Frankston station catch the 788 Bus to Portsea and get off at the Point Nepean / Franklin Road stop - access to Shelly's Beach is a 400m walk north on Franklin Road.

Families travelling by car can park across from the beach on Franklin Road or in the car park on Hemston Avenue at the south end of the Beach.  Parking is also available in the streets surrounding the beach - check signs for parking restrictions.

Facilities:

Parking available across from the beach in Franklin Road, in the car park Hemston Avenue and on surrounding residential streets.  Please check signage before leaving your car especially in the summer months.

Dog poo bins are located on the grassed areas at the back of the beach - no plastic bags are available so please remember to take your own.

Picnic areas are located at the back of the dog beach - there are no BBQs but there is plenty of space to set up a picnic rug and enjoy the beach.

Closest Bus stop to Shelly's Dog Beach is located at the corner of Franklin Road and Point Nepean Road.  This beach is easier to reach by car than by Public Transport.

Extra Information / Beach Sheet Download:

The grassed areas behind the beach are not off the leash areas and are quite closed to the road - ensure you have your dog/s on a leash and under control when in this area to avoid accidents with traffic on surrounding roads.  During the summer months these roads can be quite busy with beach traffic.

Remember to take plenty of fresh water for your dogs as they will swallow a lot of sea water while swimming and can become dehydrated from the increased intake of salt.  Make sure also that you wash your dog/s after a day at the beach as salt and sand remaining in their coats can cause irritation and skin problems.
